Adam Coffman was born in 1778 in Shenandoah County, Virginia to parents Augustine Kauffman Jr and Mary Catherine Houtz. He was married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Anna Hausenfluck. They married in 1806 in Shenandoah, Virginia, and had at least five children together before Elizabeth died, circa 1819/1820. In 1820, he married to Mary Cook in Rockingham, Virginia. She raised the children by Elizabeth but had no children of her own.
Adam was an older brother of John A. Coffman, married twice and lived in Shenandoah County until the 1840s, then moved into neighboring Rockingham County and lived in the area west of Harrisonburg. He was a farmer and owned considerable land in both counties. Adam died in Rockingham County, Virginia, in August 1866, age 88.
