Place of birth problematical: In 1850 Census of family we believe to be John's, he is shown as born in Kentucky; in 1870 Census in Abingdon, Knox Co., Illinois, John reported birthplace to be Ohio; in 1880 in Coldbrook twp., Warren Co., Ill. he reported birthplace to be Ohio; in 1885 State Census of Nebraska, he reported Nebraska; in 1900 Census for Clay Co., Nebraska, he reported his birthplace to be Kentucky. More precise birthplace information has yet to be found. A possible explanation is that he might have been born across the line from a border town. Military service: Age 29, height 5'4 3/4", hair auburn, eyes gray, complexion light, occupation as miner; said born in Ky., mustered Feb. 18, 1865 at Quincy, Ill. Said residence was Kelly, Warren Co, Ill. Deserted en route to Ft. Kearney, Neb. July 29, '65.

“At Goldsborough, North Carolina, in the spring of 1865, the battalion organization was discontinued, a sufficient number of organized companies of recruits having arrived by way of New York and Morehead City, North Carolina, to fill up the two regiments, Colonel Hall again being assigned to the command of the Fourteenth. After the capitulation of Johnson, the Regiment marched to Washington, D. C., where, on the 24th of May, it took part in the grand review of Sherman's army. It afterwards proceeded by rail and river, to Louisville, Kentucky; thence, by river, to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; thence marched to Fort Kearney, N. T., and back.” Source Information: Historical Data Systems, comp.. American Civil War Regiments [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: The Generations Network, Inc., 1999.
