John stayed with his grandparents in Ireland when his parents moved to America in 1886-1887. The day his mother & siblings arrived in the US, a six year old John found his grandfather dead on the plow. One year later this grandmother died. Shortly there after he followed his family to America where he attended St Vincent's School, later married Mary Duffy, had 8 children and died at 52.

John is quoted as saying, "Praise be the name Jesus!"
