    John (Carter) (Capt.), b. about 1620, d. 14 Sept. 1692, "aged about 76"; m. (1), about 1644, Elizabeth -----, b. about 1613, d. 6 May 1691, aged 78 (?); he m. (2), in 1691, Elizabeth Grace. … Capt. John Carter seems to have been in doubt of his own age! He was an important man in his town and so appears in various depositions in Middlesex Co. Ct. He swore, 18 Dec. 1674, that he was aged about 54 (b. 1620); on 20 Dec. 1670, aged 49 (b. 1621); on 5 Apr. 1659, aged 40 (b. 1619); in Apr. 1660, aged 40 (b. 1620); and in this last deposition he was joined by "his brother William Green," aged 45. Finally his gravestone and that of his first wife are still extant and read: "Here lyes ye body of Capt. John Carter, aged about 76 years deceased ye 14th of September 1692." "Here lyes ye body of Elizabeth Carter wife of Capt. John Carter, aged 78 years died ye 6 May 1691." "First wife of Capt. John." (Woburn Epitaphs.)

Peter Fowle]; and Abigail, 24 Apr. 1648[, wh. m. James Fowle]; Hannah, 19 Jan. 1651; and John, 6 Feb. 1653. His w. d. 6 May 1691, aged 78.

    [Note: the phrasing may be clearer if it is realized that at the writing of the will in 1691 daughter Abigail was the widow of James Fowle, and the James Fowle mentioned below is her son. She married in 1692 Deacon Samuel Walker. As the wording indicates, John himself was unmarried when the will was rewritten but he remarried soon after.]
    Will of "John Carter Sen'r of Wobourne", dated 15 Jun 1691, proved 1 Apr 1693, mentions son John Carter, son-in-law James Converse, my daughter Marys Children, my daughter Mary, my daughter Abigals Children, my daughter Abigall, my daughter Hannahs Children, my daughter Hannah, "my son John Carter shall have two shares and my sons in law Peter ffoull & James Convers Each of them one single share and my daughter Abigall the other share thereof". Son John and wife to be executors with sons-in-law Peter ffoull and James Convers to be executors if son dies, else overseers. Codicil, undated, "for as much as after ye wrighting of this my will I am marryed ... Elizabeth my now Maryed wife...".
    Oct 1692: "An Inventory of the Estate of Cap'n John Carter Late of Woburn Who deceased Sept'r ye 14th 1692".
    7 Jan 1692/93: Agreements of "ye Children of Capt'n John Carter Late of Woburne (Deceased) Sept'r ye 14th 1692", mentions "John Carter ye Eldest son", "our Mother in law (who lived with him about ten months)", signed by Jam's Fowll, Peter ffowle, James Convers 2nd, and John Carter. Attached note: "it is agreed y't James ffoull shall signe in ye behalf of his mother himselfe brothers & sisters"
