John Arnold's origins have yet to be established. His first confirmed sighting is on 18th November 1747 when he married Elizabeth Stokes at Luton in Bedfordshire. Between 1748 and 1761 they had seven children baptised at Luton.

John's wife Elizabeth died in 1766. He appears to have outlived her by nearly 18 years, being buried at Luton on 29th June 1784.

    We know John was still alive in 1766 when his wife died. This appears to be the only plausible burial at Luton after that time for him.
