"I was told by Theo Weiss, grandson of John F. Weiss, of Witchita Falls, TX that his grandfather had served in the US Calvary for several years. The date on the above photo is 1894 which would have put John F. Weiss at Fort Sill during the time of Geronimo's transfer there after his capture. This would really be interesting to know if John Weiss was there for sure at this time. At first the helmet looked foreign to me, but after some research on helmets of the US Army, this is indeed a dress helmet for the US Calvary and if you look closely you can see the horse hair plume. Different colored plumes meant different things. Theo also told me that he thought they had left the New Braunfels area where his parents settled because of cheaper land and because of a draught that was occuring in Texas at this time."
