Henry Hausenfluck, founder of the Hausenfluck and Hosaflook families in Virginia, first appears in Virginia with his marriage to Margaret Fortig (Fertig), September 22, 1783 in Shenandoah County. [2] Most of the German families in the Shenandoah Valley were established by immigrants who arrived in the fifty years before the American Revolution, but there is no one with the Hassenpflug name, or any variation, in the the pre-Revolutionary War immigration and pioneer records. Therefore, the appearance of a new arrival soon after the end of the Revolutionary War is a significant clue that Henry could be one of the so-called "Hessians," German soldiers who fought for the British during the war for independence. Large numbers of Hessian soldiers were captured by American forces, especially after the Battle of Trenton, in December, 1776, and kept in prison camps in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. They were freed when the war ended and many, especially the young single men, preferred to stay in America rather than return to their homeland.

Henry and Margaret lived in the Pugh's Run area about three miles north of Woodstock and in a 1787 tax he is listed as owner of two horses and two cows. Margaret died sometime between the birth of their last child about 1805 and 1810, when Henry is listed as living alone in the 1810 census. The younger children were either with older married siblings or Fertig relatives. Henry is listed in the 1820 census, over age 45, and is last included in the 1823 personal property tax lists of Shenandoah County, drawn up each year in March. He does not appear in the 1824 list or any later ones.
