Facts and Events
A note in Hollenbach's transcription of the St. Paul's Church records reads as follows: "The Kabel family, usually spelled Gabel, moved to Heidelberg Township in what is now Lehigh County. Three members of the family served in the militia from Heidelberg in the Revolutionary War. Hann Michael died, intestate, in 1794 and left his widow Margaret Elizabeth and 8 children. Michael Gabel, Jr., the only surviving son, settled in the Wyoming Valley, PA." Michael Gabel's marriages are confusing. This appears to be the sequence of events: First, he married his stepsister Anna BREISCH (around February or March of 1753). This marriage was annulled by the church fathers because of the step relationship, but not before Anna became pregnant with their son. Next, he married Margaret Elizabeth RUTH (sometime in the fall of 1753). But this marriage was set aside because it occurred before the birth of his son. Third, he married Anna Maria BALTZHAUSER (in June, 1754), but this marriage was annulled because the church fathers decided he was still really married to Margaret Elizabeth RUTH. He had quite an exciting year or so. A Michael Gabel is listed on the muster roll of the 8th Class, Seventh Co., Third Battalion, Northampton Co. Militia in 1778 (PA Archives, Fifth Series, Vol. 8., p. 238. It is not clear if this is this man or his son. Michael Kabel and Elisabetha appear on April 6, 1788 as sponsors of Daniel, son of Rudolph and Christina Lauchnor. Michael Gabel, Sr. and Elisabeth Margareth appear on Apr 13, 1794 as sponsors of Elisabetha Saubert, daughter of Heinrich and Margaretha Saubert.
