Facts and Events
[edit] BiographyPlainfield Connecticut Jesse was born 12 September 1730 in Plainfield, Connecticut. He was the son of Jonathan Spalding and Judith, [1] Judah Billings.[2] Jesse married Mary Kimball on at the First Congregational church in Griswold, New London CT, 8 Mar 1757.[3]( on 28 February 1757.[2] ) The children of Jesse and Mary were born in Plainfield, CT:[2]
Windsor, Massachusetts Profile of Mary Spalding lists her as born 1772 in Windsor MA, the daughter of Jesse. "History of town of Lanesborough, Massachusetts, 1741-1905":[8]
Revolutionary war records[9] of 1775 place Jesse in Gageborough, Massachusetts, later renamed Windsor. He was a Sergeant under Capt Watkins Company, Col Patterson's Regiment, Aug 1, 1775[10] Lanesborough Congregational Church Records (christenings): " Sept. 22, 1782 -- Children: Jonas, Thomas Major & David, Names of Parents: Jesse Spalding "[11] Jesse's children born in Windsor MA:* Mary Spalding b 25 Nov 1772 (No primary birth record) m Robert Burch abt 1795 in Windsor (No marriage record), d 11 Jun 1853 Schuyler NY age 85y, 7m, wife of Robert.[12]
Jesse Spalding married Mrs. Prudence Clark, Jan. 1, 1795.[14] Jesse died (age 69) on 12 March 1800 in Windsor, Massachusetts.[15][16] Geography Note Lanesborough is 7 miles west of Windsor as the crow flies, currently 13 miles, 20 minutes by car, estimate 1-2 hours by horse. Merge Comments Spalding-1842 was created starting with the Spalding Memorial of 1872,[17] with information of Jesse in 'Plainfield Connecticut. Changes at:[18] Spalding-1715 was originally created as the father of Thomas Major Spalding based on the christening record in Laneborough, MA[11]. All that was known about him were the records pertaining to Laneborough and Windsor MA. So his initial birth estimate was 1750 in MA. The 1897 revised Spalding Memorial,[2]in particular the Revolutionary War records for Captain Jesse Spalding[2]make it clear that the Jesse, later of Windsor, MA, was born, son of Jonathan, in Plainfield CT. Further support that the two Jesses are the same comes from the 1790 Census for Windsor MA.[19] It shows both Jesse, and his son Jabez Spalding (born in Connecticut in 1761). Research Notes

The Jesse who was in Windsor, Massachusetts had just four persons in his household in 1790, one male 16 and over, one male under 16, and two females. The three children baptized at Lanesborough in 1782 as children of Jesse (Jonas, Thomas Major, and David), were perhaps the children of a different, as yet unidentified, Jesse Spalding. Date: 1 Jun 2024 AUTH: Joan Moore Text: Possibly. But I have been able to find no trace of a Jonas Spalding in Windsor, or west of Windsor, 1800 to 1850. There are numerous David Spalding in upstate New York, but none in Genessee, where Jabez settled. Perhaps Jonas and David didn't survive to 1790. The 4 people in the census would then be Jesse, son Thomas Major, Jesse's wife, and daughter Mary (Molly) who didn't marry until 1795.Thomas Major (an ancestor of mine) was in Ontario, Canada, married with a child by 1804. I cannot find a Jonas or David Spalding, born in the right time frame there either. Date: 1 Jun 2024 AUTH: Patricia Abbott Text: The four persons in the 1790 census could be Jesse, his wife Mary, their daughter Mary who did not marry until about 1795, and their son Nathan who married in 1803. Date: 2 Jun 2024 AUTH: Joan Moore Text: I agree maybe 2 Jesses. Based on one Jesse married Prudence in 1795, while the other one transferred with his wife Mary, land to Jabez in 1798 (a record I don't know how to confirm). Also wife Mary turns up in Schuyler New York, and census records for Nathan are consistent with her in his household in 1810 and daughter Mary's household in 1820.So we shouldn't have merged the Jesses. But it took that to figure it out. Best to add more records, especially a profile for Nathan so it is clearer there are 2 Jesses before separating them. I had the impression Nathan was older than Molly based on the list of children (without dates) Changed my mind. There is no primary evidence of 2 Jesse's. And the theory is based on too many secondary source assumptions. Date: 2 Jun 2024 AUTH: Patricia Abbott Text: Joan, the documentation I have on the family of Jesse and Mary is detailed under the profile of Mary Kimball, including the deed for land transfer from Jesse and Mary to Jabez.
