In 1843, began practicing medicine in Fayette Co, IN. In Sep 1844 he moved to Jackson Co, OH, where he worked for 3 years. In 1847 he bought out the "Jackson Standard" and served as editor and other capacities until 1863. From 1847 to 1859 he was in the banking business. In 1859, he was admitted to the bar and began practicing law. He was Mayor of Jackson for 5 terms. Politically he is a republican, and voted first for General Taylor.

J. W. Laird, attorney at law, was born in Chillicothe OH 20 Feb 1822, a son of John and Phoebe (Ford) Laird, the former a native of Pennsylvania, of Scotch descent, and the latter of Virginia, of English descent. He was reared in Chillicothe, and there received his early education. When eighteen years of age he began the study of medicine under Dr. L. W. Foulke, of Chillicothe and attended lectures at Louisville KY. After a practice of three years in Indiana and two in Jackson, where he located in 1844, he, in 1846, began the publication of the Jackson Standard. In 1856 he opened a private banking house. In 1859, having for a number of years been reading law, he was admitted to the bar and has since been practicing in Jackson. Politically Mr. Laird is a Republican. He has served several terms as Mayor of Jackson. In 1850 he was an unsuccessful candidate for the Constitutional Convention in the interest of the Whig party. He has been a member of the Masonic fraternity since 1846, and has taken all the degrees up to Knight Templar, including the order of High Priesthood. Mr. Laird was married in 1843 to Mary Marshall, a native of England, born 16 Jul 1824. Of their ten children but seven are living. Mr. and Mrs. Laird are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. NEWSPAPER OBITUARY

Laird-- Hon. J. W. Laird died at his home in this city, April 18, after an illness of several weeks, aged 77 years, 1 month, and 28 days. His funeral was held Friday under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity and the Oddfellows, and was largely attended. Dr. Laird as he was commonly known although he had not followed his profession for profit for half a century, was one of the most widely known of the citizens of Jackson County. He came to this city from Chillicothe, his birth place, in 1844. Until 1847 he practiced his profession as physician. He then became interested in the Standard which he conducted for several years. In 1851 he became the cashier of the first bank established in Jackson. in 1850, he was admitted to the Bar. He helped organize the corporation of jackson, and was a leader in the organization of the republican part in this county. he was Mayor of jackson six times, and held the office of Probate judge for six years.
