A letter written April 10, 1882 by Colonel John Hartzel of Newport, Perry County, Penneylvania to Rev. J. C. Hartzell, says, in part:

"My Dear Sir- Yours of the 7th just received. Your request to send you all the principal points of the Hartzels in America. I will what I received from my father and from my Uncle Henry Hartzell. My great grandfather" (John George, Jr.) "emigrated to America before the Revolutionary War. He settled in Northampton County. There was a small town built on part of his land and for a long time went by the name of Hartzells Town and from that to Youngmanstown. I have any old map of the state of Pennsylvania in which I find among other towns the name of Hartzellstown. My great grandfather had 7 sons, six located in different parts of Pennsylvania as follows: George Hartzell, my grandfather located in Adams Co. on the Opossum Creek eleven miles north of Gettysburg. He had six sons, all of them with the exception of my father and my Uncle Jacob lived and died in or near the old homestead.

MY UNCLE JACOB WENT WEST SOMEWHERE ABOUT THE YEAR 1820. HE SETTLED IN OHIO. HE HAD TWO SONS, JESSE AND JOSIAH. My father came to Perry County in 1823 where two of my brothers, Samuel and Michael, and myself, still reside. My brother Adam went to Iowa in 1844 where he still resides.

My grandfather's six brothers located as follows: one brother remained with his father in Northampton County. Nathan Hartzell purchased land in Lucern Co., PA near Wilkes Barra. Another of the brothers settled in Northampton CO., near ----------------. Another brother settled in ---------------. The other two went to Westmoreland CO. One of them was named Adam. One of the two last named was a bachelor.

This writer says John George, Jr. had seven sons, but we find record of only four - those mentioned in the letter may have been cousins instead of brothers to George III (grandfather of the writer) Bible records quoted on page 11 is tof family of Lucern County.

John Hartzell was one of four brothers who moved to Perry county in about 1828. He was born in 1815 down in Adams Co. John carried the title Colonel, possibly either due to his service during the Civil War or simply as a courtesy.

John married August Geibel, born about 1825 in Prussia. According to census records, their children consisted of George L, born 1850, Ethan William, born 1852, Jonathan Peck, born in 1854, Charles Vinton, born in 1856, James born in 1858, John F born in 1860, Ada born in 1864 and John Gates, born in 1868.

John kept a hotel in Newport at the time of the 1860 census. The remainder of the enumerations, he listed his occupation as laborer. John was the enumerator for Perry county in 1880, so we can blame him for the poor handwriting on those records.

Looking for info on the Hartzell family of Perry county. The family prior to this had lived in Manallen township of Adams county. Several of the boys (Samuel, Adam, John) came to the county about 1827. Lived for a time in Rye Twp, then Penn and Center Twp. My gggrandfather Adam Hartzell lived in Newport Borough before leaving for Iowa in 1840. Colonel John Hartzell lived in Perry much of his life. His brother Samuel died there in 1884.

Anyone who can shed more light on the Hartzells of Perry county, please reply to the list.

The letter above may tie our Jesse Hertsel to the PA Hertzels/Hartzell family. There are not many Jesse Hertzels noted in the ancestry.com records. This may very well be our answer. Jan. 17, 2006

1830 U S Census for Deerfield Twp., Portage CO., OH shows a William as head of household. One male age 5 to 10, males 15 to 20 and 20 to 30 (more than one but I cannot make out how many) and one 50 to 60. Females: one 5 to 10 and one 10 to 20. one female 40 to 50.

In the history for the Hans John George Hartzel family (b 1749) in PA the son of Jacob Hartzel B 1784 has some reports of a birth date of 1810. This means that either our Jesse is not Jacob Hartzel's son or the birthdate is wrong on our part or whoever has the 1810 reported date. I could not find a christening record for Jesse Hartzel at Bender's Lutheran Church when we visited there in Oct. 2006.

I believe Jesse born 1817 could be the son of Jacob Hartzel b 1784 in Adams CO., PA because his family moved to Stark CO, OH around 1824 or 1825. Mary Triplett's family lived in Summitt CO, Conventry Twp. and Akron, OH is only about 20 miles from that area. No much to go on. I have included this information in my tree because I do believe there is a good possibility that Jesse Hertsel was Jacob Hartzel's son.
