JENNINGS NIX; A SHORT HISTORY

My Grandfather showed me his Great Grandfathers grave at Ellisons Cross Road, Altoona Alabama when I was a small lad or 8 or 10 years of age. He also told me much of the details of his direct ancestors including his Father Harrison Jenning, and his Grandfather Daniel NIX. After I retired and Annette became sick I started doing a genealogy search for all of the descendants of Jennings, together with as much family history as I could establish. This has been a learning exercise, albeit not simple. I have identified many direct descendants of Jennings, and the total continues to climb as I make additional finds. However there are still serious gaps and many questions that are still to be answered.

Jennings birth is recorded in the census as 1803 in Georgia. I have not been able to establish additional details nor to identify his parents, or any siblings to my satisfaction.

The following deed seems to be an indication that Jennings Nix was selling his farm in Pickens County, South Carolina and preparing for their move to Alabama.

1852 Dec. 20 Pickens County SC. Deed BK G-1, pg 323, and 324. Release for 320 acres land. Know all men by these presents that I Jammes (sp Jennings) Nix of Pickens Dist. & state aforsd. for the sum of $250.00 pd. me by Thomas Alexander of the State & district aforsd. sell unto Thomas Alexander all that plantation peace (sp) parcel or tract of land situated in sd. William was not born until 1832 and would not have been counted in the 1830 Census. 1830 Fedral Census, Pickens South Carolina, NIX, Jennings Name:Nix, Jennings Township:Unknown Townships County:Pickens State: South Carolina Year:1830 Roll:M19_173 Page:274 Image:533

She also found the family in the 1840 Pickens County, South Carolina Census, with William 8 years and everyone else 10 years older. The spelling for Jennings is "Ginnis". In the 1850 Census she found him listed as Jennings Knix. Living with them was Lucinda's Parents, David Alexander, 86 born VA, and Mary Alexander 85, born VA. and William 17, born SC. Note that Mary Ann was not listed at home. She would have been 22 but we have not been able to find a husband for her. (See latter information at Mary Ann) Daniel is shown as head of house hold with three daughters and Tyre is also shown as head of household with one son. Thomas Alexander is shown as married with no children, but the spelling is Knix.

Also along the same road toward Walnut Grove is another farm of 120 acres owned by William W. 1 NENE HUNTSVILLE No 11S 3E 23 NOTE: section 23 is north and East of Walnut Grove and in the middle of a Warrior River swamp, not the kind of land one would be purchsing. But section 32 is South and East of Ellison Cross Roads and exactly where My Granddaddy showed me his G-Grandfather's home place. So I assume someone transposed the two numbers some where in the history of the records.

1860 Federal Census, Alabama, Blount County, Eastern Subdivision, Post Office Summit, enumerated on 18th of June 1860, by J. H. Skinner, Page No 44, Image 44 of 106. residence #300, Family # 299,

This means that the NIX family, at least some of them got to Blount County before the Ellisons, Harrison Jennings Nix was 7 and born in Alabama, while 6 year old Berry was born in S. Carolina. But then census records just like other records may not be completely correct in all phases. Check to see if I can find any land purchase by Ellison before his death, or was it all by William? Is there any way to locate the resisdence in 1860?

Jennings Nix and Lucinda Letty Alexander. Family Records found in the Alexanders of Upper SC, page 425. (see book for more details).

This came off of the http://www.cei.net/~cnix/fam01918.htm and is very close to the Alexander Book. The major difference is the acknowledgement of Jennings son William, who is NOT listed in the Alexander Book. This was the first time Ive have seen a date of death for Lucinda or a birth date for William. I am corresponding with this woman who is a direct descendant of Jennings, and who has done extensive research on this family. James Jennings Nix was the son of Daniel and Margaret Nix of Pickens District Eastern Division. He was born 1803 in Ga., and died 24 Feb 1885, Blount Co., Ala. Folder #450 of the Genealogical Folders in the Leonardo Andrea Collection : Collection of the Late Leonardo Andrea.

AUTHOR

Andrea, Leonardo.

PUBLICATION INFORMATION

Salt Lake City : Filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, 1974.

NOTES

Microfilm of ms., typescript, and printed materials collection in possession of Connie Andrea, Columbia, South Carolina.

CONTENTS

Contents of folders vary from a few leaves to ca. 300 leaves and may contain genealogical correspondence, transcripts of Bible records, transcripts from public records, clippings from printed materials, pedigree charts, family group sheets, genealogical sketches, etc. Folders may also contain material on related families. Families are chiefly from South Carolina but include some from North Carolina, Virginia, and elsewhere, especially in the Southern states.

FOLDER #450 IS TITLED "JENNINGS". I HAVE A THEORY THAT SAYS THAT THE GRANDMOTHER MAYBE GGRANDMOTHER OF MY JENNINGS WAS HERSELF A JENNINGS. THAT IS TO SAY THAT THE MOTHER OF MY JENNINGS NAMED HIM AFTER HER MOTHER.

Genealogy Hints: I suggest the following steps to construct your genealogy:

1. Interview all the old people in your family, be sure and tape record them! This is very important, and you will be shocked at what they said that you simply did not hear and write down! Guaranteed! You will eventually cherish these. Convert them to MP3 format and write them all to a CD (be sure and include some MP3 players on the CD, as there may be another format du jour in ten years).. 2. Copy all Bible or other family records. Distribute these copies widely. 3. State birth and death records are available after 1915. These contain the names of parents. 4. Go to the U.S. Census, beginning with that currently available, 1930, and work your way backwards. There, with luck, you can track your family back to 1850.

  • From 1880 onward, be sure and go to the original census pages from the Soundex. The Soundex is only an index, and does not contain all census information. Write down or copy everything: date, location, net worth, census taker, etc. The 1880 and onward census not only tells you where the heads of household were born, it also tells you where their parents were born, very useful information, if you do not know!

5. I would recommend that you note the heads of household +/- 10 families either way from yours, and anyone of a different surname in the family listing, especially old people, as these are usually "in-laws."Do note that relationships are not shown prior to 1880, just who was living in the household. 6. Prior to 1850, you will have to look for a child of the correct sex in the correct age range, and then try to prove the conjectured connection with other documents. Usually (sometimes?) this can be done with probate and deed records. Probate records include testate (with a will) and intestate (without a will). Both usually contain useful detail, and often list heirs. South Carolina has probate packages (sometimes called "bundles") for each estate, envelopes full of precious original records, that contain all extant documents associated with that estate. Please, handle these original documents with utmost care. Unfold them very carefully, and do not stress the ancient paper. These are the only original records we have! Never, ever, desecrate such a document. If you don't want to know what your ancestor did, don't read it! But never desecrate it! I have seen sections physically cut out of probate and court records. These records are all microfilmed and in multiple locations. You cannot hide the indiscretions of your ancestors in this manner! Instead, be thankful that you have information on them at all. The times were rough and tumble. Many of us have bastards, rough types, thieves, and, yes, murderers and deserters, in our family trees somewhere. And, while I am on the subject, Loyalists were not necessarily people of no principle. Read carefully the web site up on the Revolutionary War. Things are not always as they have been portrayed to us. Note carefully that even Earl Cornwallis himself sympathized with the colonies! He was just loyal to his country. Now I ask you, would you have had him be otherwise?? I have all of these someplace in my family, all dutifully documented. As my wonderful Aunt Cleo put it: "The Truth's the Truth." Don't hide what you find. Why do you think these people came to settle a new and wild land? If they were well set at home, they remained there! Our ancestors were third born unwanted sons of well to do, or, more likely, vagabonds, peasants, debtors, horse thieves, or worse.

If you are having trouble tracing your family, note every neighbor in the census, I would suggest plus or minus ten from yours, note every legal witness on a deed, and then go through superior and inferior court books, to seewho might have appeared in legal proceedings with your ancestor. Then do a complete genealogy on each of these families. If you are doubtful just how useful all that might be, check out my John Gill, who died in 1822 in Allendale (Barnwell County then). This is precisely how I proved which of the five extant John Gills after the revolutionary war was him, and that he was from Richland County. The proof was surprisingly convincing. It is all on the web. Read it and draw your own conclusions. Holler if you disagree (grin). Much to my surprise, this technique unambiguously demonstrated that John Gill was living in Allendale when he sold his father's land in Richland County! This approach was suggested to us by a professional genealogist, Mrs. Theresa Hicks. Time consuming? Try 30 years! I started working on my Allendale Gills when I did not have any gray! It was fun, I met a lot of interesting people, and it eventually worked.

We were directly in Sherman's path, just be grateful that Charleston records were never burned. Sherman's crew burned deeds and entire court houses, indeed, whole cities, including Columbia! Ah, now, there is a tale for the telling! That tale is just beginning to take shape on the Civil War in South Carolina web site. What fire in the wooden court houses did not get, the Yanks did. Sherman attempted to burn South Carolina to the ground once he managed to cross the Savannah River. Yay verily he probably would have burned the very ground itself had he been able to do so!Do you have some oral or documented civil war history of Richland County? Please send it. Please state documentation. Oral tradition is fine, just state: who, where, and when. However, despair not! The Equity Records for Richland County somehow escaped the Yankee Conflagration.

Prior to 1785, South Carolina records were kept in Charleston. These are pretty much extant, the originals in Charleston, microfilm copies in the South Carolina Department of Archives and History (Columbia). You can order the indices and records by mail from the SCDAH.

If you have suggestions on the wording of this page, or suggestions on other sources, please send them. Would you like to write or rewrite one of the pages? All comments are welcome. Richland County Home Page

Early Blount County Marriages (1820 - 1892)

Background: Not long after Blount County became organized in 1818, area marriages began to be recorded by the newly formed governing authority in Blountsville. Blount County is fortunate because, unlike some county courthouses across the state, Blountsville and later Oneonta never experienced a catastrophic fire which burned most of their records. While the Blount County courthouse has never had a fire, some of the marriage records are missing. One of the marriage books was "borrowed" from the court house and never returned. This book covered the time period between 1845 and 1852. From most accounts the book was taken sometime during the 1930s. The whereabouts of that book remains one of Blount County's great genealogical mysteries.

Other researchers should be mentioned by way of thanks in making this information available. They include Blount County Historian and Records Clerk Warren Weaver, as well as Lottie Painter Hudson and Carolina Nigg for their countless hours work in reviewing and compiling the original data from the marriage books.

The researcher should keep in mind in many cases the names are spelled phonetically. Be sure and check all possible spelling variations to locate your ancestor.

The arrangement convention adopted here is a name followed by a semicolon, another name and semicolon, and then the date the two were married. The date given is usually the date the marriage occurred. Most of the time, marriage bonds and licenses were obtained and dated a few days before the actual marriage was solemnized. It was the responsibility of person performing the ceremony to report to the Probate Judge's office the date the ceremony occurred. In a few cases, when for one reason or another the date of the marriage ceremony was not recorded, the date offered here is the date the bond was signed, or the date the license was obtained from the Probate Judge's office. Each name occurs twice in the index; the groom is listed first in one, and another entry is offered with the bride's name listed first. That way the index can be used to locate either grooms or their brides.

Other genealogical information, not recorded here, can be obtained from looking at the actual document. The earliest Blount County marriage licenses were actually marriage bonds entered into by the groom and co-signed by another person. Often, the groom signed the marriage bond with a good friend, such as today's equivalent of a "best man," or else a relative such as his father, his brother, his brother-in-law, or even his future father-in-law. Additionally, some marriage ceremonies were performed by a Justice of the Peace (JP) or a Minister of the Gospel (MG) who also just happened to be a close family member. The researcher can use this list to prepare and save time on his next personal visit to the courthouse to review those particulars. Because of possibility of mistakes in the long journey this data made from original marriage book to digital form, the actual document should be considered the ultimate authority. Use this index as a reference. (Book and page number from the original marriage books are not presented here).

For a fee, the court house archives can print a copy of the marriage bond or license from their records. I'm not sure what the going rate is for copies, but you can write the court house at:

It is not possible to read the page number on the top right corner of the sheet because the sheet is placed so that section of the sheet is cut off. If you view the census at <ancestry.com> It is, however, image #6 of 160 in the Western Division of Pickens District, South Carolina, 1850 Federal Census, 27th day of July 1850. The census index gives the page # as 374, but this sheet is before that, maybe #372 or #373.

Line #18, Dwelling #47, Family #49, Ts. Alexander Knix, age 19, M, Farmer, born South Carolina, Line #19, Elizabeth Knix, age 16, F, born South Carolina.

There is no doubt that this is Jennings and Lucinda, and it would appear that the second family would be her parents, The ages are off from what other researchers have by about four years, but so are Jennings and Lucinda.

The other family would be Thomas Alexander NIX, the son of Jennings and Lucinda and his young wife of one year, Elizabeth Gassaway, daughter of William W. Gassaway and Cosby Curtis.

The William Alexander age 17 on line # 17 is the youngest son of Jennings and he would soon marry Elizabeth Littleton, the daughter of Asa Littleton and Nancy NIX . Can I assume that this David Alexander is the same as the Daniel D. Alexander b 1760, and Mary Unknown that I had previously assumed as the parents of Lucinda and the in-Laws of Jennings? Would his full name be Daniel David Alexander???

Message: Hello, I was wondering if it is possible they had a daughter named Mary born in Orangeburg circa 1794. She married Mr. Nix and had 9 children. Her son Daniel named his 1st son John Jennings Nix and her 2nd son William Riley Nix . Do you think this might be coincidental. Daniel and several of his siblings moved eventually to Choctaw County Alabama. I would be happy to share their down line.

Best regards,

Regina Markey

Have not been able to determine parents of either Jennings Nix or Temperance Pool Ellison Nix. Believe that Daniel and Margaret Nix might be parents of Jennings Nix. I'm still working on this family and would be glad to have some help.

Maps Tracing the Formation of Counties in South Carolina

The links below are to maps illustrating the changing face of the state as new counties have been formed.

     Proprietary Counties, 1682
In 1682, after the first hard years of settlement, the Proprietors ordered three counties laid out. Berkeley County, centering around Charleston, extended from the Stono River on the south to Seewee Creek (present-day Awendaw Creek) where it emptied into Bulls Bay on the north. Craven County lay north of Berkeley, and below Berkeley, Colleton extended to the Combahee River. Later, a fourth county, Granville, was laid out between the Combahee and the Savannah rivers.

     Parishes of the Anglican Church
Throughout the colonial period, the small population and its limited legal needs kept most government, records keeping, and judicial activity confined to the municipal limits of Charleston. Parishes of the established Anglican Church served as election districts, and courts with jurisdiction over the entire colony sat in Charleston.

     Districts, 1769-1784
Georgetown extended from the North Carolina line to the Santee. Charleston lay between the Santee and the Combahee. Beaufort sat between the Combahee and the Savannah. Northwest of Georgetown was the Cheraws District, bounded on the west by Lynches River; west of the Cheraws was the large district of Camden, bounded on the west by the river system of the Santee, Congaree, and Broad; south and west of Camden, two more large districts extended to the Savannah River--Orangeburg to the south, and Ninety-Six to the north.

     Districts and Counties, 1785
The 1785 act gave the Cheraws District the counties of Chesterfield, Marlboro, and Darlington; it divided Camden District into York, Chester, Fairfield, Lancaster, Richland, Claremont, and Clarendon counties. It gave Ninety-Six District the counties of Spartanburg, Union, Laurens, Newberry, Abbeville, and Edgefield. And it divided Orangeburg District into Orange, Lewisburg, Lexington, and Winton (an early version of Barnwell) counties.

     Districts and Counties, 1786-1790
In 1786, part of the unorganized Indian land, which had been taken from the Cherokee Indians during the American Revolution and lay northwest of Ninety-Six District, became Greenville County; in 1789, the remainder of the Indian land became Pendleton County. A few counties had been set out in the three Low Country districts of Georgetown, Charleston, and Beaufort, but there, where the old parish system was well established, the counties failed to take root.

     Districts, 1791-1799
In 1791, the four Orangeburg counties were abolished, and two new districts were created. Washington District was formed to encompass the counties of Greenville and Pendleton. Pinckney District took York and Chester counties from Camden District, and Spartanburg and Union counties from Ninety-Six District.

     Districts and Counties, 1791-1799
In 1791, Salem County was formed from portions of Claremont and Clarendon counties; and Kershaw County was formed from portions of Claremont, Lancaster, Fairfield, and Richland counties.

     Districts, 1800-1814
In 1800, most of the counties were formed into districts. Washington, Pinckney Ninety-Six, Camden, and the Cheraws districts vanished, and the counties they had encompassed became districts. Claremont, Clarendon, and Salem counties became Sumter District. Marion District was formed from part of Georgetown, Colleton District from part of Charleston, and Barnwell District from part of Orangeburg. Georgetown yielded Horry District in 1801 and Williamsburg District in 1804. That same year, Lexington District was formed from Orangeburg with roughly the same territory as the old county of the same name.

     Districts, 1815-1867
In 1826, Pendleton was divided into the two districts of Pickens and Anderson. In 1855, Clarendon District was taken from Sumter with the same boundaries as the old Clarendon County of 1785.

     Counties, 1868-1870
The Constitution of 1868 stated that "the Judicial Districts shall hereafter be designated as Counties" and formed Oconee County from the western part of Pickens.

     Counties, 1871-1877
In 1871, Aiken County originated from parts of Orangeburg, Edgefield, Barnwell, and Lexington.

     Counties, 1878-1907
In 1878, Hampton County emerged from part of Beaufort; in 1882, part of Charleston became Berkeley County; and in 1888, parts of Marion, Darlington, Williamsburg, and Clarendon merged to become Florence County. In 1895, Saluda County was created from part of Edgefield. In 1897, Bamberg emerged from Barnwell; Cherokee from parts of Spartanburg, Union, and York; Dorchester from Berkeley and Colleton; and Greenwood from parts of Abbeville and Edgefield. In 1902, Lee emerged from parts of Darlington, Kershaw, and Sumter.

     Counties, 1908-1915
Calhoun emerged in 1908, from parts of Orangeburg and Lexington; Dillon, in 1910, from Marion; Jasper, in 1912, from Beaufort and Hampton.

     Counties, 1916-Present
McCormick emerged in 1916 from Edgefield, Abbeville, and Greenwood; and Allendale, South Carolina's last county, emerged in 1919, from Barnwell and Hampton.

Hi Dalton! Walton County, Georgia ?????

About 1803ish, the upper part of OPD was considered a part of GA (Old

Walton County.) Actually a war was fought between NC and GA over this land. Also, just came across this on one of my yahoo groups. A large number of Quakers were in Wrightsboro, GA and they started migrating to other places around 1803. May want to check that out.

Dalton, As best as I can determine the line of the Nix family that started out in N.C.and S.C. mountains and that later moved down to Pickens and Northern Alabama are from a different set of the clan surname than my line is from. During the Civil War there were two unrelated (closely at least) set of Nix's located around what is now the Bear Cave/Hendersonville area. Those of my line moved down to the east around Forest City/Morgantown area to the Cotton Mills that were thriving in the early 1900's. The other of which I think you are tracing left around 1890's or so and migrated down towards Northern Georgia and Northern Alabama. There are still a lot of the Nix line there still today. To further complicate it the Nix family was sp;lit early on (around 1810 or so) due to a remarriage by Andrew Nix after his first wife died. Andrew bore a lot of children (more than 8) whom due to his advanced age when married were all much younger than his first set of kids by at least 20 years. The first set of sons did not have a whole lot of love for their later sib's and stayed pretty much seperated. My line is form the older kid's and the Pickens line (as best as i can determine at least) is from the second set of kids. Hope this helps some. Also be careful of what you look at if you find a family tree type document that shows back to early 1700's England with a John Nicks and Margaret Schroodes. The lady that did this tree could not find a solid connection between 1760 and 1800 so she took the liberty to fill in the blank with her imagination. I know my line is solid back to Andrew Nix in 1810-20 but beyond that I have not a clue. Good luck.

Winnie would be Minnie, but I do not think so. Also Ellis could be a surname the two are listed in a seperate Residence and Family, but there is no indication of her "Keeping House" as there normally is for a wife.

To; JC, & EVERYONE ELSE

I have a book, Titled; The Heritage of Etowah County, Alabama. Published by: Heritage Publishing Consultants, Inc. Printed by: Walsworth Publishing Company, Inc. Copyright, 1999.

It includes just about any facts on, the History of Etowah County, Alabama. I know they have, more than likely came out with another book since, but this one serves my needs for now.

On a two columned page, it has just about a half of a page (one column), of information, facts, and the history about Turkeytown.

If you would like I can send you a scanned image of this page, or I can send you the information in a text format, if you just let me know which one, I can get it out to you via email.

This book also has a lot of other information that might help, so if you, or anyone else would like a look-up of anything, that is in this book, and/or has anything to do with Etowah County, Alabama, just send me an email, (shacrabtree2@aol.com) and I will see if what you need, is included in the pages of this most helpful tool (book).

I would be more than GLAD to search for the information that you, or anyone else might need, just send your email with a request, and if it is in the contents of this book, I can send it to you, and by chance it isn't included, or nothing can be found on your request, I will send you an email, that states my findings!

Just send me an email with your questions, and/or request for an information look-up, to me! THANKS! HOPE I CAN BE OF HELP! SHANNON! @~}~ shacrabtree2@aol.com

William W. GASSAWAY, was a neighbor in the 1830 Pickens South Carolina census. Jennings was #1 and GASSAWAY was #9. His daughter by his first wife, Cosby Curtis would latter become Jennings' daughter-in-law. It also appears that Jennings named his first son Tyre, after neighbor #24 Tyre Boon. I have not been able to detect a formal naming order for any of the Nix chldren.
