JAY GOETSCHIUS DIES FROM FALL
Auburn Resident Fell Headlong Down the Basement Steps At His Home at 115 West Second Street
Jay Harris Goetschius, 75, of 115 W. Second Street, Auburn, suffered a skull fracture in a fall down the basement steps at his home at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and died at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Dr Bonnell M. Souder hospital in Auburn. Mr Goetschius has been in failing health for about two years. He fell headlong down the basement steps. He was born in Dekalb County on Oct 23, 1890, the son of Ira and Sarah Goetschius. He was a member of the First Methodist church of Auburn. Mr Goetschius' first wife, Mrs. Ethelyn Rowe Goetschius died in 1944 and on June 19, 1948, he and Hazel Flemming were married. He was a retired mechanic for the Greyhound Bus Co. at Detroit, MI, and moved back to Auburn seven years ago.Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Max Goetschius of Madford, Ore., and Rev. Robert Rowe of Deerfeild Beach, Flor.; two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Melby of Birmingham, Mich., and Mrs. Idola Brown of Indianapolis; 10 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. A brother, Frank Goetschius and two sisters, Mrs Mabel Housel and Mrs. Grace Close preceded him in death. The body was at the Gerig funeral home in Auburn, where funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday. The Rev Carl O. Wirey, associate pastor of the First Methodist church in Auburn, officiated at the services. The body will be taken to Grand Lawn Cemetery in Detroit Saturday morning for burial.
