Obituary of Joseph Jasper Griner as written in "The Camilla Enterprise" dated 5 Mar 1920.

Camilla, Georgia. A sad shock was experienced by many friends throughout the County Monday morning when it became known that Mr. Jasper J. Griner had died suddenly and unexpectedly Sunday, 28 Feb 1920, at 8:00 PM. Mr. Griner had been in declining health for months and had been subject to attacks of the heart, yet he was thought to be as well as usual when he retired Sunday night at the home of his son, Mr. Sam Griner. Shortly after he retired, he was heard struggling by his son and daughter-in-law in the next room. Thinking that one of his attacks had come on, Mr. and Mrs. Griner ran in to help their father, and found him expiring, the end coming in a few moments. Funeral services were held at Mt. Zion Church Monday, 1 March at 4:00 PM. Rev H.N. Burnett, a lifelong friend of the deceased, conducted the services and a large number of friends and relatives attended the funeral, paying honor and respect to the memory of the departed. Mr. Griner was among the oldest citizens of the county. He was 75 years of age at the time of his death. He was also one of the earliest settlers of the county, and was looked upon as part of the county and he was. Stalwart in character, true and courageous, he was a man on whom to depend. He was plain and unpretentious, yet possessed a cheerful, sunny disposition which was always the same. The deceased was loved and honored by all who knew him and his death removes from our midst one of the best citizens of the county, a man who has served his day well and who will long live in the memory of those who have known and loved him in life. Mr. Griner was also a veteran of the Civil War, serving four years with honor and bravery in the Confederate Army. The deceased is survived by his two sons, Mr. C.G. Griner and Mr. S.G. Griner and two daughters, Mrs. T.W. Curles and Mrs. Eliza Luckey, all of this county. He leaves also four sisters, Mrs. Eliza Cumbie of Boston; Mrs. Jack Philips of Coolidge; Mrs. Rhoda West of Doerun; and another sister living near Hartsfield; four brothers, Mr. Offie Griner of Bainbridge; Mr. Lee Griner of Moultrie; Mr. Billy Griner of Bridgeboro and Mr. Tom Griner of Sale City, who mourn his loss. The entire county feels the loss of this notable citizen, and sympathy is extended to the bereaved family by their many friends, who sorrow with them.
