Facts and Events
Recorded as "Jan Van Barkelo" in THE VAN BARKELO FAMILY IN AMERICA. He removed with his stepfather to New Jersey in his youth. He was a resident of Staten Island as early as 1697 he acquired 80 acres previously granted in 1680 to John Taylor; this tract was one of three lots known as Soldier's Lots, the other two being owned by Yellis Ingart and Pieter Pieterse Hagawout. As his name was not found in the 1708 census of Staten Island, it is presumed he was dead at that time. He does not seem to have used the surname Van Barkelo and his widow and children are listed in this census under the designation HARMAN. The family name reappears, however, in the records of three of his children, thus making the identification of this family fairly certain. |
