James Ernest Spire was born in 1890 at Alcester in Warwickshire, son of Ellen Spire, formerly Belcher, and her husband Jabez William Spire, a gardener and labourer. His birth was registered simply as 'James', but he was baptised 'James Ernest', and subsequently seems to have been known as Ernest. He was baptised five miles south of Alcester at Bidford-on-Avon, where his parents had lived before moving to Alcester. The 1891 census finds Ernest living with his parents and siblings at The Moors in Alcester. Some time between 1891 and 1892 they moved to the opposite side of the town centre, to the Malt Mill Lane / Gas House Lane area, where Ernest's sister Ruth was born in 1892.

The 1901 census finds Ernest living with his parents and siblings at Gas House Lane. In 1908, when Ernest was seventeen years old, his father died aged 66. Just over two years later Ernest's mother died aged 53. The 1911 census finds Ernest living with most of his siblings at Malt Mill Lane, with his eldest brother Albert being described as head the of household. In 1911 Ernest was described as a farm labourer.

Ernest has yet to be researched after 1911.
