James Sloan
Birth 1775
Death 18 Jun 1820 (aged 44–45)
Burial
Old Hanover Presbyterian Churchyard
Grantville, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, USA
James Sloan was the son of Alexander Sloan and "Jean Moor." He was born in about 1775 and died 18 June 1820. He married Nancy "Ann" McCreight on 29 Mar 1810. Nancy McCreight was the daughter of Capt. James and Jennet (Strain) McCreight.
The Historical Sketch of Old Hanover Church by Rev. Thomas H. Robinson, D.D., published in 1878 by the Historical Society of Dauphin County, page 35 and 26, says James Sloan was born 1775 and died 1 Dec (sic) 1820 and excludes son John, but includes his wife Nancy. Plus James Sloan married Ann M'Creight on 29 Mar 1810, p 26.
James' stone clearly says 18th June and not 1st Dec, per above source. The month and day were both reversed for Nancy and James in this book. It says Nancy died 18 Jun when this stone does instead. Her stone says 1 Dec instead.
J M Runk & Company's book, The Commemorative Biographical Encyclopedia of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, 1896, p 70, lists 3 Sloans, John died Sep 1741; Samuel died Sep 1777 and James of Hanover Twp., died Dec 1775, that may be connected. Page 142-145: says John Sloan was the "ancestor of the Sloans of Hanover," who died in Sept 1741, leaving wife Jean and kids: James, Robert, William, John, George, Saran and Cinquas. Some of the Sloans left for Virginia, in about 1760, during Indian troubles with Rev. Richard Sankey. Alexander Sloan, 1744 - Jan 1812, married Jean Moore and had children: John 1767 (wife Elizabeth French); Robert, born 1769 (wife Sarah McCormick); Alexander, born 1771 (wife Jane French); Isabella (unmarried); JAMES, born 1775, married Nancy McCreight; died 1 Dec 1820 in Hanover; William, 1777 - 1818 in Hanover (unmarried) and Jean, born 1781, married Alexander Bell of Hanover, died in Ohio in 1832.
Also buried here in the cemetery are his father and his wife Elizabeth's parents.
