James A. Seaver of Rhode Island served in the Union Army in the Civil War. He enlisted as a Corporal on 17 April 1861 in Company B, 1st Infantry Regiment of Rhode Island. He received a disability discharge on 31 May 1861 ("Military Records of Individual Civil War Soldiers," compiled by Historical Data Systems, online database viewed at www.ancestry.com). James A. Seaver of Providence, Rhode Island, re-enlisted as a Sergeant on 21 August 1861 in Company E, 3rd Heavy Artillery Regiment of Rhode Island. He was on duty at Fort Wells, Hilton Head, SC on 23 January 1862, and returned to his unit about 15 May 1862. He was furloughed on 19 November 1863 for 30 days. On 15 January 1864, he was promoted to Full Sergeant, and to Full Lieutenant 2nd Class on 3 February 1864, effective 14 February 1864, when he transferred from Company E to Company D. He detached from Company E in Beaufort SC on 28 March 1864, and was attached to Company Light Company D of the 1st Heavy Artillery Regiment of the Regular Army on 28 March 1864. He was mustered out on 15 October 1864 ("Military Records of Individual Civil War Soldiers," compiled by Historical Data Systems, online database viewed at www.ancestry.com). CENSUS: In the 1870 US census, the James A. Seaver family resided in Providence 6th Ward, Providence county, Rhode Island. The household included James A. (age 29, painter, $250 in personal property, born RI), Irlena F. (age 27, keeping house, born CT) and William E. (age 8, born RI). [LDS Microfilm 0,552,978, page 143, dwelling #441, family #776]. In the 1880 US census, the James A. Seaver family resided in Providence, Providence county, Rhode Island. The household included James A. (age 38, born RI, clerk in post office, father and mother born MA), wife Orlena F. (age 36, born CT, dress and cloak maker, father born CT, mother born RI), and mother-in-law Laura L.
