Son of Patrick Rion, born 1725 and who died in Westmoreland County, VA, and Mary (maiden name not yet known) Rion. Per the 1782 Virginia Heads of Families census, he was in Hampshire County, Virginia (Mineral didn't break away from Hampshire County, VA, until 1866,) with 12 White people in his household, and no slaves. Thirteen houses away, a John Ryan lived with eight White people in his household, and no slaves. A Malcolm family story states that James and Jane died when their children, Mary Ryan Malcolm, and Edward Rion, were small. However, the story also states that James and Jane died in an Indian attack, and Indian conflicts in the area were over after the Battle of Point Pleasant on 10 October 1774.

Thus far, I have identified the following brothers of James Ryan, Jr.:
    Soloman Ryan (1747 - 22 October 1837 in Randolph County, Va/WV)
    John Ryan (1759-1836)
