Hanks, Thomas - born 1759 in Virginia; entered service 1780 in Hampshire County, Virginia; resided there to 1800 when moved to Ross County, Ohio, thence to Logan Counnty, Ohio, where applied for Pension; Pension application rejected, less than 6 months service; died there; query letter in file states a [note: different person] Thomas Hanks married Betty Lee & resided in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, per that County records; query letter in file states soldier was brother of President Abraham Lincoln's grandmother Lucy Hanks. F-R4571, R1182.

    The State of Ohio Logan County
    On this 31st day of July 1833 personally appeared in open Court before the Honorable George B. Holt president Levi Garnood, James McPherson and Robert Smith his associate judges of the Court of Common Pleas of Logan County now sitting Thomas Hanks a resident of said County of Logan aged Seventy-four years being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June the 7th 1832 – That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated, that he was drafted into the service of the United States for the term of three months in Hampshire County in the State of Virginia in the fall of the year 1780 and placed under the Command of Captain Daniel Richardson does not recollect the names of the other officers, he joined the main Southern Army commanded by General Green [Nathanael Greene] but not certain at what point whether Hillsboro or Salisbury, was marched to big and little Pedee Rivers took there Christmas [indecipherable word] on big Pedee in fact spent the principal part of the time in Marching and Countermarching through the Carolinas, we lost our baggage in crossing the Dan River being closely pursued by the British (we were part of our time in pursuit of the Tories several of whom we captured toward [)] the spring we were placed as guards over some British prisoners who we conducted to Albemarle Barracks. Was not in any engagement but in the month of March returned home got Credit for two, three-months tours of duty not positive whether he obtained a regular discharge if he did is long since lost or mislaid. Sandford Carder and William Linton of Fayette County Ohio will prove this service the deposition of companies this application. And the said Thomas Hanks doth further declare that he performed
    one other tour of duty of two months in the winter of 1781 under the Command of Captain Isaac
    Persons & Major Vincent Williams, this tour was most of the time employed in guarding British
    prisoners at Winchester Barracks in the State of Virginia. After the performance of this tour
    returned to the County of Hampshire and continued to reside there until the year 1800 when he
    removed to Ross County in the State of Ohio and from said County of few years since removed
    to Logan County where he now resides, he hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a
    pension or Annuity except the present and he declares that his name is not on the pension roll of any Agency in any State Only that of the State of Ohio, he further states that he was born in the State of Virginia in the year 1759 according to the record he received from his father and continued to reside there until after he performed the service above stated in this declaration.

    The State of Ohio Fayette County: Personally came before me the Subscriber a Justice of the
    Peace Sandford Carder1 and William Linton who made oath according to law that Thomas Hanks
    was a soldier in the Revolutionary war under the command of Captain Daniel Ritcherson [sic]
    under General Green in the year 1780 and received a discharge for two (3) months tours also that
    the said Thomas thanks was a resident of Hampshire County Virginia State at that time and
    further this deponent saith not.
