Facts and Events
James Thomas O’Sullivan, known as Jim was born on the 19th February 1863 in Axe Creek, near Bendigo, Victoria, to Irish immigrants Patrick O’Sullivan (1822-1885) and Ann O’Connell (1820-1887). Jim was the youngest of nine children. Jim, along with his brothers and sisters attended Axe Creek School which was established by the Catholic Church in 1865 and the teacher was James McLaughlin. The O'Sullivan children are listed as living 1/2 mile from the school. Jim grew up farming with his parents and is listed as a farmer on his wedding certificate. His older brothers Michael and Patrick farmed in the Axe Creek, Bendigo area until around 1880. Jim obviously moved from Axe Creek to Warragamba, now known as Diggora West, with his parents who both passed away in the area. It is here he met Ellen, possibly at one of the local ploughing competitions which have both James and Ellen's brothers listed in newspapers of the time for winning their divisions. Jim went from being a Farmer in 1886 to having his occupation listed as a Fitter on the marriage certificate of his second son, Mick when he was married in 1915. Jim died in Sydney aged 68 on the 28th of October 1931. Following his death a letter from his niece Nora O'Sullivan (McCurry) to his son and daughter-in-law, Mick and Ruby says; If ever there was an uncle I loved and admired it was “Uncle Jim”. I used to feel charmed when he would pay us a visit and play his violin. I am sure I shall never forget his kindness. Image Gallery
