James Morris, b. 1775 moved his family to Wetzel County, (West) Virginia in the early 1800's when West Virginia was still part of the state of Virginia. This is the history of his descendants. The Morris Family History was originally compiled by Hoy B. Morris ca. 1778. It is being continually revised an updated by Robert D. Morris. Other Wetzel County family names being researched are Bellard, Dulaney, Kelley, Rice. Also researching Baker and Rabel families from Tyler County, West Virginia. 1. James Morris(1) (2)(3) was born in 1775 in , Montgomery, PA..(1) (4) Birth location was taken from war papers. Montgomery Co. was then Philadelph ia Co., PA He died on May 12 1834 in Rocky Run, Wetzel, VA (now WV).(2) WFT shows date of death as Dec 5, 1834 He was buried in Garrett Cem., 8 Mile Ridge, Reader, Wetzel, VA (now WV).(5) From the Morris Family History by Hoy B. Morris-----James Morris was a cousin of Robert Morris of Revolutionary fame, and his mother was a cousin to General Benjamin Lincoln, who fought in the Revolutionary War, and it is claimed that a relationship existed with President Abraham Lincoln’s ancestors. The name Mordica Linkhorne appears to have been a family name, and appears in the early family of President Lincoln. Said James Morris was first Sergeant in Captain William Crawford’s company, organized for the defense of Washington County, now Green County, PA, in the years of 1793 and 1794 against the Indians in the Indian War. James Morris’ enlistment was from May 7, 1793 for one year and continued in the said war for 8 months and was honorably discharged. James Morris, (b. 1775, d. 1834) married Margaret Moore, (b. 1778, d. July 1865) on November 10, 1794 in Green Twp. then Washington County, Pa., by Clergyman John Corby. Margaret was a daughter of Dr. John Moore of Mooresville, PA. James Morris resided with his wife and owned two tracks of land along Dunkard Creek near Blacksville, in Monongalia County, Virginia, now West Virginia. One of the farms being the same farm that Alexander Clegg lived on when his daughters were captured by the Indians and his wife was shot and wounded by them in April 1791. James and Margaret raised their family on that farm, and in his later days sold it and moved to Wetzel County, VA now WV, where he died on Rocky Run on May 12, 1834. His wife, Margaret, was a doctor and much noted as a mid-wife. Her services were in great demand, she called for far and near, and traveled a great deal about the country. She was a women of great energy and skill, and lived until July 1865. She died in Wetzel County near where her husband died on Rocky Run. James and Margaret Morris had 21 children born to them. eighteen boys and three girls, some of them died young. The ones growing to adult-hood as far as ascertained were: AMOS, ISAAC, ANTHONY, JONATHAN, JAMES, SAMUEL, NATHAN, JESSE, MOSES, MICIAH, JACOB, MORDICA LINKHORNE, JOHN, HESIKIAH, RUTH, and HANNAH. Late report by Hoy B. Morris, ca. 1987.....It has been said by many that James Morris was a cousin to Robert Morris, of Revolutionary War fame. No one has stated that he was a first cousin, of which I am sure he was not, but it is very possible he could have been a 2nd or 3rd cousin. Of this I haven't done much research. The name Mordicia Linkhorne, appears to have been a family and appears in the early family of President Lincoln. As for the Morris and Lincoln family connection, it could possibly be true, but again I have done no research on this. Many sources claim that James Morris III is a cousin to President Abraham Lincoln. The link can be found through James' father (Johnathan Morris, 1739-1812) and paternal grandmother (Rebecca Flowers, 1720-1806). Rebecca Flowers married James Morris II (1716-1742) and had one son--Jonathan Morris (this James' father). James Morris II died in 1742, when Jonathan was just 3 years old. Rebecca then married John Lincoln (1716-1788) and had several children. Jonathan kept the Morris surname, but was raised in the Lincoln family. John Lincoln and Rebecca (Flowers/Morris) Lincoln are the great-grandparents of President Abraham Lincoln, via John/Rebecca Lincoln>Abraham Lincoln>Thomas Lincoln>Pres. Abraham Lincoln. This would make James Morris III the half-cousin of Thomas Lincoln and half-cousin once removed from Pres. Lincoln. Decendants of James Lincoln III would also, therefore be second half-cousins [X]-removed from Pres. Lincoln (where X is the number of generations below the child of James Lincoln through whom you are descended).
