James Dryburgh LUMSDEN was born 26jan1810 at Dysart, Fife (IGI), and died 1875. . James died 17oct1875 in Aberdeen (A. Lumsden). Scottish Archives have the will registered in 1875 of Rev. The date 1854 probably has something to do with the death of James’ mother in 1853 James studied at St. Andrews and at Edinburgh University, was ordained at Inverbrothock church, Arbroath, in 1836 and translated to Barry, north of Dundee, in 1838. He was appointed Professor of Systemic theology in Aberdeen Free Church College in 1856 and in 1864 became its first principal. He wrote several theological publications. His interest in Sweden and his assistance given to Swedes visiting Scotland led to him being made a “Knight of the north star” (newspaper report). James Lumsden (1810 Dysart) was in 1851 minister of free church in Barry at Barry (with sister Janet (1824)), in 1861 professor of theology, Free Church College, with a Swedish visitor, at 159 Crown St., Aberdeen, and in 1871 principal of Free Church Cook College, Aberdeen at 34 Bonaccord Terr., Aberdeen (census).
