Was a teacher and suffered from lung trouble so was told to get a job to take him out into the fresh air, he became a commercial traveller. He worked for 'Yorkshire Road Tarbinders' until he died in his 40s. His son Tom had notebooks of his listing his expenses, one entry for his lunch was " 1Pt. beer & Sandwich 6d. " He walked miles on the job. After James died his boss took on Tom to work in the office so that he could help his mother support the family of 3 other boys. He was born in South Wales where his Dad was a miner. The family moved to Bloxwich, Staffs by 1856, then to Leeds by 1867. |
