James Hazlett was 5'10" with brown hair, grey eyes, and a light complexion. Early in life, he made his living as a farmer. Although he served with the Union Army during the Civil War, his duties as a cavalry private brought him west into the Dakotas to battle the Lakota Sioux. After he was discharged, he married, started a family, and lived for some time in Des Moines. Around 1880, he moved to Kansas with his extended family. He died in Palestine, TX in 1890. The cemetery where he was buried has become overgrown and his gravestone cannot be located. James' descendents all use the alternate spelling "Hazlitt" - although NPS military records list his surname as Hazlett, the spelling used by his sibling George and all of George's descendents.
