Along with twenty other families that had gathered in the south part of Pomfret by 1720, they were in a peculiar geographic position. Their was a distinct, independent township between them and the main settlement that required a long journey over rough roads that was exceedingly difficult to traverse, making church attendance arduous. Some of the residents attended church in Canterbury. in 1728, the 32 inhabitants sought to incorporate as a town, but failed to obatain a charter. They then employed a minister, Mr. William Blossom, and chartered an ecclesiastical society in May 1731. A meeting house was erected in 1734 and organized by James Cady. It had original membership of ten men.[4][5] James married Abigail Unknown (born about 1700). Their children were:* Bathsheba, bapt. Sept. i, 1717; m. Dec. 16, 1734, Baraciah Johnson. He d. before 1740.

[7] James died on February 4, 1732 in Canterbury, Windham, Connecticut Colony, aged 38.[8][9] [10]James Cady was buried in Aspinwall Cemetery, Putnam, Windham, Connecticut. His headstone is inscribed James Cady Died Febry ??? 1732 in the 39th Year of His AGE.[11] Entries in the probate file of James Cady, dated from 1733 to 1736, indicate that his widow, Abigail, was the executrix of his estate, and that Abigail, the widow, had married Samuel Whitmore.
