James was a merchant at 8 Burnbank Terrace in 1861 (census) and life insurance agent and widower in 1881 (census). James married 8oct1823 in Nielston or Gorbals (registered in both places) Ann Maxwell BLACK who was probably a distant cousin and who probably died in apr1864 (family letters) but undoubtedly before 1881. James BLACK of 8 Burnbank Terrace died 15apr1881 according to his will, aged 81years (scotlandspeople). Ann is sometimes called Anne in the birth registrations of her children. In 1841 at Bailock Cottage, New Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire, with Eliza Black (b. 1806, Scotland) the following people called Black, born in Scotland, were present: James (b. 1801), merchant, Ann (b. 1806), Isabella (b. 1838), Patrick (b. 1840) and Philip (b. 1841). Also present in 1841 and born in New Kilpatrick were Charles (b. 1828), Elizabeth (b. 1835, could be Eliza), James (b. 1836, could be John) and Mary (b. 1834) (census). In 1851 James (b. 1799 Glasgow), general commission merchant, Ann M. (b. 1803 Nielston, Renfrewshire), Ann M. (b. 1829), Mary (b. 1834), Eliza J. (b. 1835), James (b. 1837), Isabella M. (b. 1839), Patrick A. (b. 1840), Philip B. (b. 1842), Robert C. (b. 1843) and Jane A. Black (b. 1845) lived at Woodlands House, Barony, Glasgow (census). In 1861 Mary (b. 1837 Milngavie, Stirlingshire), Robert C. (b. 1843), clerk, and Jane A. (b. 1845) lived with their parents at 8 Burnbank Terr., Maryhill, Glasgow; daughter Anna M. Smith (minister’s wife, b. 1833) was a visitor with grandchildren Thomas A. Smith (b. 1854) and Ann E. Smith (b. 1860) (census). In 1871 James (b. 1799 Glasgow), widower, commission merchant, Mary (b.1836 Milngavie, Stirlingshire), daughter unm, Patrick A. (b. 1840 Glasgow), son unm, commission merchant, and Jane A. Black (b. 1857!?), daughter unm, lived at 8 Burnbank Terr., Glasgow, which had 11 rooms with windows (census). In 1881 James Black (b. 1799 Glasgow), life insurance agent, Mary Black (b. 1836 Milngavie, Stirlingshire) and a granddaughter, Minnie Black (born 1869 Glasgow), were present at 8 Burnbank Terrace (census).
