Facts and Events
Philip BLACK was born 27 jul 1805 and christened 29aug1805 in Glasgow (IGI). Philip Barton BLACK was born 27 jul 1805 in Glasgow (scotlandspeople). Philip BLACK, the 6th child, was probably christened (birth would be illogical) in Barony parish 29aug1805 (scotlandspeople). He lived as an adult in a mansion house on Jamaica St., Glasgow that had been purchased by his father („The old country houses of the Glasgow gentry“). From "Glasgow past and present" by Robert Reid (1856): "In Jamaica St. there was a mansion erected before the colse of the last century by Mr. Black (John Black, calico printer), an eminent merchant of the city. John Black, calico printer, was not Lord Provost." In 1849 Philip Black claimed land, named St. Enochs, Portland Bay District, from the Crown and transferred it to Mr. Brown in 1851; it included Mt. Emu Creek and Bangal, occupied by Alexander Anderson, jun (Melbourne Argus); Alexander was a beneficiary in the will of the father in law (William Timms) of Philip’s daughter. Alexander (1813-93) of Bangal was son of Alexander Anderson (1782-1856) and Cecilia Oliphant (1785-1872) (Fife FHS). In 1863 Philip Black, 31 Lynedoch St., was appointed a director of Merchants House; in 1865 he was noninated as representative on Barony Parochial Board (Glasgow Herald). James Morison Stephenson (1802-57, brother of Martin Moubray Stephenson (1797-1850), brother in law of Elizabeth Scott) married in 1824 Anne Catherine Corney nee Harterton; Ann had been married to Matthew Corney (1787 Whitby, Yorks-1823). Matthew’s brother Robert (1777 Whitby-1830 Tasmania) was witness at the wedding of James. 2 children of Robert married women related to the Anderson family of Abbotshall, Fife. Margaret Anderson, of that family, married (1845 Victoria, Australia) Philip Barton Black, a 1st cousin of Elizabeth Scott (common ancestors James McNair and Margaret Barton), wife of Martin Moubray Stephenson.
