*Is this baptism too early for him? Age at death differs from death certificate and headstone Death certificate info provided by Fanny Beare, probably daughter in law, who may not have been certain of his age at death. Headstone info likely to have been from closer members of family - widow, children, etc, but still may not have been accurate.

Re name of BEARE.
Beare/Bere Devon & Cornwall plus small groups at Yeovil & Mutford in Suffolk for Beare. Bere is Devon & Somerset only. In Tudor record Beare is abundant, Bere frequent. Abundant in 1332. Beer (Barnstaple) Devon & Cornwall, highest no. in Barnstaple. Bere and Beare frequent in Tudor records but variable spelling in earlier period makes unravelling difficult.

Re Bee Hive Inn 'Within this hive, we're all alive Good Liquor makes us funny If you are dry, step in and try The flower of our honey.'
1863, Western Gazette Saturday 24 October We hear that the sides of a well at the Bee Hive Inn have partially given way, and that the recent earthquake is supposed to have been the cause of the displacement.
(In 1863 on October 6 a loud report was first heard, which could easily have been imagined to be a terrific explosion at a distance, and many people believed that Taunton Prison had been blown up by Fenians until their own eyes convinced them otherwise, This was followed by a shaking of houses, bedroom furniture, windows etc. and many people, imagining that their houses were being ransacked by burglars, hastily slipped on garments and searched for the intruders. The shocks were also felt at Curry Rivel and in the Parrett Valley between Stoke-sub-Hamdon and Langport. In Bridgwater the ships lying in the river fairly rocked to and fro, and some portion of a large body of ice in the river near the bridge was broken up. This was a large earthquake with an epicentre in Herefordshire, felt over most of England and Wales.

I managed to look at the Yeovil Tithe Map this morning and, despite it being a pretty awful copy (and on microfiche too), I can confirm that plot 594 is the land on which the current Beehive Inn stands. Consequently, I have drawn some details on my original map and attached it to this email. I was interested to see that the bit of land fronting Huish appears to be a different plot (possibly 604) so I've labelled it accordingly - perhaps if one of us has the opportunity, we might check it out.
