James died Tuesday of last week in his room at the Monticello Hotel. He was the son of Benjamin Bassel, Sr. and Lucinda Noris Bassell. He was born March 26, 1842 at Brown’s Creek near the present town of Mt. Clare in Harrison County. The late John Bassell, Clarksburg lawyer, was his full brother. He had a number of half brothers and sisters. He graduated from West Point, June 17, 1867. (Weston Independent, Wed. 9 Dec. 1925). Note: Bassel spelled with one "l" and 2 "ls" in this account. Born March 26, 1842, in Harrison county; elementary education received in country schools and at his home; later attended Monongalia Academy, Morgantown; entered United States Military Academy, West Point, June 5, 1863; graduated June 17, 1867, class receiving their diplomas from the hands of General Sherman; commissioned Second Lieutenant Second United States Artillery; resigned November, 1870; served as Lieutenant Colonel in the Egyptian Army; made tour of world 1873-5; elected to House from Lewis in 1916; committee assignments 1917: Military Affairs (Chairman); Federal Relations, Humane Institutions and Public Buildings, Prohibition and Temperance.
