Tatko Story - Jacob Tatko born 23 1896 in Kleinlomnitz, Austria Hungary, son of Jacob and Suzanna Bentshe Tatko, 2nd child in family of seven. Father was a shoemaker and also had a small farm.
In 1913 Jacob Tatko decided to come to US where older sister already living in Fullerton, PA. She sponsored him, sent him $100 for his fare. He had to contact an agent to get him across border because it was illegal for men of military age to leave and he had no passport. [More description of journey in text.] Arrived in Fullerton on 13 Sept 1913. Worked 5 years as general labor in iron foundry and furniture factory.
Jake came to Idaho in July 1918 to work for uncle George, who had another 160 acres south of his homestead (bought relinquishment of Robert Albert Langford, a school teacher from PA who was speculating.) George also had another 60 acres a mile north of Morrowtown. George’s cousin and her husband Anna and John Koritko were living on homestead, so Jake lived with them until crop harvested, then worked at Winchester lumber mill during winter. March 1919, Jake moved to Morrowtown place and farmed. It was dry year and grasshoppers ate nearly entire crop. In 1920 Jake rented and moved to Tatko/Langford place with good crops, but in 1923 hail destroyed entire crop, had to borrow money.
Fall of 1925, Jake went to Fullerton to visit sister, met and married Anna Pieger (14 Jan 1926). Anna had big shock learning to live on farm. Children: Eugene 2 Sep 1928, Robert 13 Sep 1931, Louise 3 Aug 1935, Margaret 25 Oct 1939.
Farm received electricity in 1937; Jake began to get more modern machinery; also bought more land (120 acres in 1936). Jake bought more land (120 acres in 1947).
Jake died 3 January 1981.

Letter 17 Dec 1992 My dad [son of Jacob Tattko and Suszanna Bentshe] was born July 23, 1896 and came to this country in 1913. He was only 17 at the time and had to sneak out of Austria Hungry because men of military age were not allowed to leave the country at that time because World War I was starting to brew in Europe. He also had to lie about his age in order to get into the U S. --- Note: 19 October 1993 Whitehall, PA used to be Fullerton, PA. That is where dad and mom (Jacob Tatko and Anna Pieger) both settled when they first came to US. Name was changed just recently, within last 15 years. Dads sister married a Roth but he did not come from Kleinlomnitz.
- ↑ Notes from Reece Mayer, 1991
Jake and Anna Tatko had 4 children. Two boys, Gene and Bob, who married, raised families and farmed the two wheat ranches they inherited from Jake, who inherited from his Uncle George, childless. He had two girls also.
In 1981 George Tatko's nephew, Jake and his wife Anna showed me around [Craigmont]. Jake's son, Gene, and family were living there [where Michael Mayer and family farmed] in a new house. George Tatko and wife never had children, so his nephew, Jake, from old country, inherited both wheat ranches. A son Bob lived on the other farm. Jake and wife were retired and lived in town.
