After a long battle with cancer, Eugene Lee Tatko, 77, passed away Friday, Oct. 28, 2005, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston.

Gene was born Sept. 2, 1928, to Jacob and Anna Tatko in Craigmont on the family homestead. He was the oldest of four children and graduated from Craigmont High School in 1946. Gene's greatest love was farming. He farmed with his father starting when he was very young driving horses. In 1964, his father retired and Gene took over management of the family farm.

From January 1952 through January 1954, Gene served in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he was an airborne radio operator.

He married Mary Jo Webber Feb. 12, 1956, and together they farmed and raised their five children.

Gene was an active member of his community. He was a member of the Craigmont Jaycee's and Lions. He served on the board of the Lewis County Soil Conservation District from 1959 to 1974. He was on the board of directors of the Craigmont Union Warehouse. Gene devoted much of his time to the American Legion, where he was a 50-year member. He served in many different roles throughout his years with the Legion. In 1978, Gene was named Legionnaire of the Year for the state of Idaho. For the past 25 years, along with his wife, he co-chaired the Red Cross Blood Drive for western Lewis County.

In later years, Gene loved to spend time with his grandchildren and was always ready to sit down and talk with his many friends.
