The JACOB MAURER branch migrated to America from Switzerland in 1835. The family of 7 had rough seas, and all became seasick. No documentation of their arrival in America has been found at "Castle Garden" by "White Creek". They first settled in Wood County, Ohio, near Maumee. From other sources, this compiler knows of the area, which was once known as the "Black Swamp". Many people in that area will be linked in this WeRelate project, at some future time. President R. B. Hayes wrote comments in his diary about the "Black Swamp", and the strong character of the mostly Saxon immigrants who drained the swamp. Those people migrated from low land areas in the Kingdom of Hannover, and were familiar with living in such lands. The Swiss Maurers were not, and all became sick with "Schittel Fever", or the Ague.

The family moved to Tuscarawas County in 1849 "because they liked the hills". RAGERSVILLE is the only village in AUBURN TOWNSHIP. It was founded in 1830. It is about 3 miles south of Sugarcreek, Ohio in a remote and hilly region of the county. The family attended the Ragersville Reformed church on Sundays. Must of the above was taken from "Maurer Family Ancestry", written by the Gottlieb Maurer Descendants.

Auburn Township has never had a large population. In the 2000 Federal Census only 1,078 people were enumerated.
