Facts and Events
"C" was probably born and died in SWITZERLAND. According to the "Maurer Family Ancestry", written by a group of Gottlieb Maurer descendants, the family extends back to 1397 when the name MAURER was "REGISTERED" with the Swiss government as "Citizens of Switzerland". Supposedly, there was a Coat of Arms conferred upon them in recognition of service during the Crusades. The last known Swiss residency was in the village of Rubigen, in Canton Bern, located about 8 miles south of the city of Bern. Bern is in the German speaking part of the country. "White Creek's" primary focus in this WeRelate project is on the group of pioneers from the same area of the PALATINATE (now in Germany), who migrated to Tuscarawas County, Oho. Some of them later migrated on to Wabash County, Indiana. A secondary interest is the people connected to them. Some of them were Swiss, such as the KARNS family from Canton Bern. Jacob KARNS (born 1796) married an Elizabeth Maurer in Switzerland, but we have no documentation as to what became of her, or if she was even otherwise related to THIS Maurer family. She probably died in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Their daughter Magdalena, married John Jacob Lower, who died in Wabash County (Urbana). The Lower / Lauer Family was probably of Palatine origin, but definitely not Swiss. Other related Swiss families were Schluep(Sloop), Speicher, and Gurtner, documented in these WeRelate pages. We do not know when "C. Maurer" was born or died, or any details about him, but we do know details of his children. Son Jacob migrated to Tuscarawas County, Ohio; and was buried in Ragersville. Son Christian ended up in Wabash County, Indiana, and is buried in the Matlock Cemetery, southeast of the city of Wabash. Daughter Catherine followed her brother to Wabash, and is also buried in the Matlock Cemetery. --White Creek 22:32, 23 August 2012 (EDT) References
