The KARNS surname was probably originally spelled: KERN

Jacob migrated to America with his wife and most of his children between 1833 and 1837, and settled on a farm in Jefferson Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. He was a member of Zion's Congregation.

When his daughter Magdalena (Lower) migrated to Wabash County, Indiana, in circa 1848, with a "group of pioneers", Jacob and some of his children remained behind. At some unknown time his wife Elizabeth MAURER died, probably in Tuscarawas County. Jacob remarried to Marie Magdalene Berger (also previously married). In 1855 there was a separation agreement. A divorce record has not been found.

Jacob then lived with a daughter (Mary Ann Margaret), until they all moved to Wabash County. He settled on a farm, located across the road from his daughter Magdalena Lower, which was north of the village of Urbana.
