Facts and Events

ANTON Probably lived in Switzerland his whole life. The reason for his descendant's use of the KARNS spelling of his surname is unknown. The Karns surname does not appear in the Swiss book of Surnames, but Kern does. KERN is the German Language spelling of the surname. It is listed in Canton Bern, and several other cantons. Listed as a very old surname.

There is no evidence that Anton migrated to America as did his son Jacob. It is likely that Anton had other children, but no evidence has ever been found that any of them ever migrated. When Jacob Karns lived in Jefferson Township, there were other Karns (Kern) people living in adjacent Auburn Township, but no connection to Anton has ever been found.

Anton's only known child, Jacob Karns, migrated to Tuscarawas County, Ohio in circa 1836. Many of the Karns family moved on to Wabash County, Indiana.

Other Swiss mentioned in "White Creek's" pages are: Maurer, Schleup (Sloop), Speicher, Steiner and Gurtner.
