Obituary

Dec. 7, 2003

A funeral service for J. M. Day, 76, of Westerville, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Hill Funeral Home, with Pastor David Hogg officiating. A private family graveside service will be held Monday at Pioneer Cemetery.

Mr. Day passed away Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, at Manor Care. He was a music educator for 30 years.

Mr. Day was a member of the Music Educator's National Conference, Ohio Music Education Assoc., and Phi Beta Mu (National Honorary Bandmaster's Fraternity). He was named Teacher of the Year of 1977 for Newark City Schools.

Mr. Day graduated from Otterbein College and The Ohio State University. He served in the Fourth Infantry Division from 1950 to 1952, and attended the Church of the Master U.M.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edith Hurst and Leonard E. Day.

    Her husband's given name was made up of letters - not initials - separated by a space: "J M" - and this unique name required endless explainations. Because he was unnamed at the time of birth, his mother was required to swear on a Bible in later years that indeed, the name chosen was J M Day. The letters reflect the initials of J M's paternal grandfather, Jerome McClellen Day, and that name had been used multiple times within the Day family.
