Everything I have on Iza is mostly hearsay. Some places that seem to be connected to her in one fashion or another are Steamburg, Crawford Co., PA, Conneautville, Crawford Co., PA, Butler, Butler Co., PA, Monaco, Beaver Co., PA, Franklin, Franklin Co., PA. She lived with Nixons at Nixon Hotel in Butler, PA. Butcher in the same town name of Kline. Possible spouse Jack Fink? Finch? Powell? - probably Irish Catholic - family opposed to marriage. He died. His mother took body for burial and refused to acknowledge Iza, marriage or pregnancy. Family tradition shows that Iza left Butler (?) to go to Erie, PA where she worked as an insurance agent. She also went to Florida and New York. In New York she worked at Gimbel's. How and why she went to Norfolk appears to be a mystery. She possibly ran a boarding house on Butte Street and probably moved several times while in Norfolk, VA. Iza 13 years older than Olie TARRANT. Miriam POWELL 11 years younger than Olie. Possible mother/daughter conflict. Pictures labeled "Miriam & Mr. deTARRANT" never "Olie".

1900 census-PA-Beaver-Freedom-I found a Jackson Small; 41; Lena B; 40; Thalia V; Jun 1880; 19; Harry; Sep 1882; 17; and Pearl Powell, niece; Apr 1880; 20; single - this is the closest I have come to any matches for Iza. My mom does remember Iza talking of an "Aunt Lean" and a Harry, but as you can see below there is a Harry in the 1910 census

1910 census shows Iza living in Jamestown, Ward 1, Chautauqua Co., NY; she resides at 204 N. Main Street; Norman J Palmer is listed as the head of family # 229 at this residence with his wife, Ella and their son, Harry; Iza Powell is listed as the head of family #230 at this address; she is 30 years of age, married 8 years, she and her parents were born in PA; she is an insurance agent; can read and write; rents her house.

1930 census shows Iza living with Olie, Miriam, Ray and Helen at 619 Upshur St., NW, Washington, DC. She is 49 and a corseter (retail). The census is taken 7 Apr 1930 indicating that Iza was 49 on her last birthday (16 Apr 1929) this gives her a birth date of 1880.

SS-5 for Iza's social security number is dated 19 NOV 1936 and shows Iza Pearl VanKirk Powell, residence 4411 Iowa Avenue, NW Washington, DC; employment Lansburg & Bro., at 420 Seventh St., NW, Washington, DC; age 57; birth date 16 APR 1879; birth place Freedom, PA; father William Henry VanKirk; mother Martha Ellen Ewing.

I do know that Iza was cremated and buried 8 FEB 1964 in Ashton, MD.

2010-I think that possibly this should be Iza Pearl Powell and that she never married and that possibly Miriam Margaret Powell was born out of wedlock. I have changed this person to Iza Pearl Powell.
