Facts and Events
In the 1860 Cherokee County, Texas Census, there is a Jane C. Zaine (I think, age 33, born AL. In her household are: Catherine Zaine, age 17, born AL; Isabella Zaine, age 13, born AL; James Martin, age 14 (possibly 19), born AL; Henry Martin, age 26, born AL. Could this be our Isabella, and they listed her with the wrong last name? Listed in the 1870 Nacogdoches County, Texas Census as Isabella W. Bagly, age 22, born AL, cannot read or write. With husband and daughter. Living next door to a James M. Martin, age 27, born AL, cannot read or write, his wife Mary, born GA, and a William W. Matthews, age 17, born MS. Possibly her brother and his wife? Living on the other side of that household is a Josiah C. Martin, age 43, born AL, wife Martha, age 36, born AL, and their children. 1 child born in MS, the others in TX. I think the child born in MS could be Josiah's sister...in 1850, he's in Tishomingo, MS, and is single. Listed in the 1880 Cherokee County, Texas Census as Isabella Bagly, age 31, married, born MS, father born NC, mother born TN. With husband and children, brother- and sister-in-law, and nephew Lony Martin. Living near James Martin and family. Lony Martin is the right age to be the Leonidas (I think) L. Martin who is listed as one of Josiah C. Martin's sons in the 1870 census. That would make Josiah one of her brothers. Lony also has his parents listed as being born in AL, and they are both listed as such in 1870. Listed in the 1900 Cherokee County, Texas Census as Isabell (hard to read) Bagley, born Mar 1847, age 53, married for 33 years, borne 9 children with 7 currently alive, born MS, parents born Unknown. With husband and children. Tombstone reads "Isabell Bagley." |
