"Isaac Ferree (born 1715; died 1782) married 1st, his cousin Elizabeth Ferree, daughter of Philip (born 1718; died --) 2nd, Susan Green (born --; died --). Upon Isaac's death Susan married Joel Ferree the noted gunsmith of Revolutionary War fame."

He lived in Bart Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Isaac was a wealthy man in his time. According to tax records, in 1780, his land was valued at $35,000.

Intestate Record

March 1784 Isaac Ferree, oldest son of Isaac Ferree, late of Strasburg Township, deceased, says his father died intestate leaving a widow and 13 children - some of whom are minors.

The late Isaac died having 3 tracts of land - 2 in Strasburg township and one in Bart township. 1 tract of 244 acres, where son Isaac now lives, 1 of 150 acres where Susanna the widow resides and 1 tract of 150 acres in the possession of Henry Hersh.

Son Isaac asks the court to appraise the property.

Guardians are appointed for the minor children. Susanna and John, over the age of 14 choose Isaac Ferree of Leacock township. The court appoints Isaac as guardian of Elijah who is under the age of 14.

The court appoints John Carpenter and Isaac Ferree as guardians of Ephraim, Lydia, Catherine, Sarah and Rebecca, under the age of 14.

In December 1784 the heirs are listed as Susanna, the widow Isaac, the oldest son Benjamin Bowman & wife Elizabeth Isaac Ferree & wife Mary Thomas Ferree Joel Ferree Susanna Ferree Elisha Ferree John Ferree Lydia Ferree Catherine Ferree Sarah Ferree Rebecca Ferree

A list of heirs in June 1786 is the same, except now Susanna is listed as the wife of Mathias Slaymaker.

Orphans Court held December 18, 1784

The court returned the consideration of the inquisition returned to this court on the first day of June last by Thomas Edwards, Esquire, High Sheriff of the said County, which said inquisition was taken on the oath and affirmation of 12 good and lawful men of the Bailiwick of the same Sheriff whereby it appeared that the real estate whereof Isaac Ferree died seized of consisting of 2 certain tracts of land in Strasburg township and one tract of land in Bart township could not be divided to and amongst the widow and children of said Isaac Ferree deceased without injury to and spoiling of the whole and that the said 3 tracts of land were worth and of the value of 4736.19 (pounds) in gold or silver which said inquisition is now approved of and confirmed by the court. And now on motion in behalf of Isaac Ferree, eldest son of the said Isaac Ferree deceased, It is ordered by the court that the said Isaac Ferree do on paying or securing to be paid to the widow and children of the said Isaac Ferree deceased their several and respective shares of and in the same valuation within the term of one year hold and enjoy the premises in fee agreeable to the acts of assembly in such provided and the court settles the distribution of the valuation of the said 3 tracts of land respectively in the manner following.

As to the tract of 244 acres in Strasburg township whereupon the said Isaac Ferree no dwells valued at 2836 pounds. It is decreed that there be paid unto Susanna Ferree, widow of the said deceased the yearly interest of 56.14.7 during the term of her natural life by the said Isaac Ferree (the son) her heirs and assignees in lieu of her dower of common law out of a principle of 945.10 to be received in the hands of the said Isaac for that purpose which principle after the death of said Susanna is to be distributed amongst the children of the said deceased and their representatives according to law allotting unto the oldest son 2 shares and the remainder of the said valuation.

As to the tract of 150 acres of warrant land in Bart township whereupon Henry Hurst now dwells valued at 250 pound It is decreed that there be paid unto the said Susanna Ferree, widow of the said deceased, the yearly interest of 5 pounds during the term of her natural life b the said Isaac Ferree, his heirs and assignees in lieu of her dower at common law out of a principal of 83.6.8 to be reserved in his hands for that purpose which said principal is to be and remain charged on the premises and after the death of said Susanna is to be distributed to and amongst the children of the said deceased and their representatives according to law allotting unto the oldest son 2 shares and as to the remainder of the said valuation the court directs that the said

And as to the remaining tract of 150 acres situated in Strasburg township whereupon the said Susanna Ferree the widow now dwells valued at 1650 pound. It is ordered that there be paid unto the same Susanna Ferree the yearly interest of 33 pound during the term of her natural life by the said Isaac Ferree his heirs and assignees in lieu of her dower at common law out of a principal of 550 pounds to be received in her hands for that purpose which same principal is to be and remain charged on the principal. And after the death of the same Susanna it is to be distributed to and amongst the children of the said deceased and their representatives according to law allotting unto the eldest son 2 shares.

And lastly the court orders that the expenses arriving on the valuation and confirmation of the premises be paid and borne by all the parties interested and be deducted from their respective distributive share aforesaid.

Isaac Ferree and John Ferree acting administrators of all and singular the goods and chattels, rights, credits which were of Isaac Ferree, late of Strasburg township, deceased, produced to the court then another account of their administration on the estate of the said deceased duly passed before the Register whereby there appears a balance on hand of 1381.87 including the sum of 92.50 Old Maryland and Pennsylvania Bills and Credit and 7.5.0 Old Delaware Bills which the court on examination allows and approves and directs that after deducting the expenses of the court the remainder being 1180.16.8 being paid and distributed agreeable to law.
