Isaac's Age at Marriage

Numerous Internet Trees and other accounts claim that Isaac Chenoweth was born in 1752 and married in 1766 AT AGE 14, but it would have been HIGHLY UNLIKELY for a young man at that age to have married in Colonial Virginia. Isaac Chenoweth's wife was Sarah Ruble was said to have been born from 1745-1747, so a birthyear of 1746 [at age 20, which still would have required parental approval] for Isaac would have been much more likely. Additional research is needed.

    ISAAC(3) ca 1752-ca 1792

Isaac was the youngest of 4 known sons born to William(2) and Ann in Frederick County, Virginia. Little is known of Isaac. He was left out of the Cora Hiatt book [though she said all the 3rd generation was known]. This was because Arthur Keith had omitted him in the summary of William's will that he included in his treatise on the Chenoweths. It is my belief that Cora did not look at the wills, but relied instead on Keith's publication. Researchers since, including Shirley Harris, have found Isaac mentioned in the will as one of the 3 surviving sons of William [Joseph, dying just prior to William, is also mentioned].

He married a Sarah, surname unknown, parents unknown, time and place unknown. In 1788, a few years after his father died, he bought 23 acres near Mill Creek in Berkeley Co., VA (now WV). Less than four year later he died. The Court of Berkeley County granted his widow, Sarah, custody of 4 children in February of 1792. It is through this document that we know her name. The last son Isaac J. was not cited in these 1792 papers, but appears ten years later in a deed granting he and his sister Elizabeth 1/5 shares in Isaac's land with Sarah as the guardian. This land was located on Back Creek in Berkeley Co. The omission of Isaac J. in 1792 and his date of birth appear to indicate that Sarah may have been pregnant at the time with Isaac J., the fifth child and last child. The older children of Isaac married in Berkeley Co. and moved to Fayette Co., PA where they are found in the 1810 census. Later they resettled in Ohio. Issac J. was the last to leave Virginia for Ohio. Where Isaac himself is buried or what happened to Sarah is unknown.

There is an interesting entry in the 1790 will of Alex Dugan naming a Sarah Chenoweth and her oldest daughter Mary Chenoweth. There are only 3 known Chenoweth wives named Sarah in Virginia at this time: Sarah McBride, the wife of James; Sina (or Sarah) Hayes, the widow of Joseph; and Sarah the widow of Isaac. This latter Sarah is the only one we do not have a maiden name for. Could she and Isaac have had a daughter Mary? Yes, if Mary was of age when Isaac died and therefore not included in the custody proceedings.
