Anna Mae Bowman family story: 

    Mary Serelda Harmon, his sister, became ill during her pregnancy and sent for her brother who had just returned vrom the east after attending medical school and marrying Narcissus Farris.  Upon hearing the need of his sister, he got on his horse and started for her home.  Having to cross the Cumberland River, the horse slipped and fell, and both Horation and the horse drowned.  When Mary's son was born she named him Horatio Gates Harmon and always called him "Doc".
