Facts and Events
Monmouth Atlas of 19 Dec 1873 reported the death of Horace Mitchell. Horace, his wife, another gentleman, and two ladies left Piedmont, Wyoming Terr. where he worked as a station agent and telegraph operator, in a carraige to attend a parade drill at Ft. Bridger, 16 miles distant, on 9 Dec. 1873. The horses became exhausted and Horace left the party to walk to the fort for assistance. The folks with the carriage were out in the cold and snow all night but reached the fort in the morning. Soldiers immediately send out to hunt for Mitchell. He was found a short distance from the fort lying on his face in the snow, frozen stiff surrounded by a pack of wolves, who had not yet ventured to touch the body. First presumed frozen to death, a physician who examined the body believed death resulted from an affection of the heart due to excitement brought on by his effort to save his wife and other companions.
