Horace E. Jones, son of Thomas and Mary Conwell Jones was born on 2 July 1845 in Henry County, Indiana. In 1873, he married Mary C. Cockefair in Cambridge City, Indiana. Horace enlisted in the Civil War as chief bugler of the Second Indiana Cavalry and was at the Battle of Shiloh. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1867. He left the Navy in 1871 and enrolled in Ohio Medical College from which he graduated with an M.D. degree in 1873. That same year, he married Mary C. Cockefair in Cambridge City, Indiana. They lived at 138 west Tenth Street in Anderson, Indiana. Horace was a member of the local school board at one time.
