Horace Sherman Hooper was born in Matagorda, Texas, Sept. 9, 1867. He moved to the Lorena area with his parents, Joshua E. & Eliza Hooper and his brothers and sisters. On November 15, 1896, he married Jessie Murphy in Lorena. She was a native of Alabama. Her parents were Eldredge Murphy and Pauline Woods Murphy. The Murphy family moved to Lorena from Eufala, Alabama, in 1880. When Horace and Jessie married, they had few worldly goods, but Horace was ambitious and energetic and possessed a lot of business cumen, and so they prospered. Horace's business interests included farming, cotton buying, and an interest in a new and thriving automobile business. He was an Odd-fellow, a Shriner, and 32nd degree Mason. Mrs. Hooper was one of the early teachers in the Lorena two-room school. She was a member of the Lorena Woman's Club and the Lorena Cemetery Association. She won many blue ribbon prizes at the Cotton Palace, where she exhibited her handywork. The Horace Hoopers were parents of four children: Joel Westbrook, Horace Sherman, Jr., Frances, and Jessie. Both Mr. and Mrs. Hooper were members of the Lorena Methodist Church. They are both buried in the Lorena Cemetery." [History of the Lorena, Texas Area, 1854-1981", p. 88]
