Horace Countryman Founder of Columbus

Horace Countryman, born September 8, 1924, in Cayahoga County, Ohio, married 1st Evaline Stone, married 2nd Elizabeth Payne, born December 16,1829, in Gratiota's Grove, Wisconsin Territory. They were married on April 22, 1850, at Monroe, Queen County, Wisconsin. Their children were: Charles Henry, born April 4, 1851, at Decatur, Wisconsin; Sarah Elizabeth, born January 6, 1853, in Yuba City, California; Joseph Elliot, born August 28, 1857, in Fayette County, Iowa; Rose Ann, born October 2, 1859, in Fayette County, Iowa; Josephine Rebecca, born September 2, 1861, in Sierra County, California. These are recorded in a family Bible. There was also a Daniel whose dates are not given. Horace Countryman died at Columbus, Montana, on January 15, 1898, and is buried at Deer Lodge beside his wife.

When the N.P. railroad came through in 1882 he moved to Stillwater, (now Columbus) and established the first Countryman Addition, where he built a hotel, and log homes for his sons, Daniel and Henry. He also had four daughters when he came west, Rosie, Margaret Quinn, Rebecca Reeves, Lizzy Woody. A granddaughter became Mrs. Dan Wood.
