In 1808 Thomas Hopper, the first settler of Washington county sold his farm in this county and moved farther west. In 1816 he visited the place, then owned by Hezekiah Hyatt Rutherford, and while standing in the door-yard pointed out where, just thirteen years before, he cut twelve bee-trees, and captured three bears in a cave. He also told how he had chased deer across the barrens or prairies, with the hounds and game could be seen several miles away. He was the only resident of that part of the county for two or three years. His home was a favorite stopping place for travelers going to or returning from the Wabash and Illinois country, and such guests were ever welcome, for they brought either news from the settlements or rehearsed the horrible tales of Indian depredation among the frontiersmen.
