HERMAN was probably born on the John Jacob Lower farm, north of Urbana. His parents soon moved the family to the city of Wabash, where he grew up. He worked at the Wabash Cabinet Co. before moving to Indianapolis.

In Indianapolis the city directories from 1902 to 1920 give his occupation as a clerk, or salesman, apparently mostly in downtown Indianapolis. Sometimes his surname was spelled: LAUER. The family moved in circa 1908 to a home on Winona Ave. (now Rookwood), very near to what later became the campus of Butler University.

In 1920 the family moved to Denver, Colorado, because of Emma Lower's health. Herman operated a poultry ranch there, as well as owning a coffee shop. In circa 1929, the family moved back to Indianapolis, and then later in circa 1934 moved back to Colorado.

In circa 1940 the family moved briefly to Florida. Then briefly lived near Mary Louise Wolf (see WeRelate page) in Washington, D. C. Sometime after 1941 when their son Milford married and settled in Indianapolis, they again moved back to Indianapolis.

In the "IMAGE GALLERY" below is a picture of Herman as a young man. The center picture was taken in 1921, of Herman & Emma Lower on top of Lookout Mountain, at Buffalo Bill's grave. The third picture was taken in circa 1912 at the Lower home in Wabash, Indiana. Herman is at the left.
