Herbert emigrated as a child, with his parents and brothers, to Clonakilty, Cork, Ireland, from Burnley Lancashire. At the time of the 1911 Census, he was not at home, but staying with his Uncle Daniel Coghlan, an unmarried man of "50". Also at this address - Mountain Common, Ardfield, Cork - that night were Daniel's widowed sister Bridget Sullivan born 1873, and his unmarried sister Nora, also born in 1873, all three adults born in Co. Cork. In 1922, when he was 23, Herbert was a Sergeant in the Medical Corp of the Irish Army. He gave his father as next of kin, at 19 Connolly Street, Clonakilty. Image Gallery
