- ↑ "Henry H. Ritter was born in February 2, 1831 near Wooster, Ohio. Hisgrandfather, John Ritter, moved from Union County, Pennsylvania to WayneCounty, Ohio in 1822. He died in Ashland County, Ohio at age 79. HenryH. Ritter's parents were: John Ritter who died Jan. 8, 1879, age 79years; and Mariah Hartzell who died March 10, 1863, aged 67 years, fivemonths and seven days. Both parents are buried at Mount Zion Cemetery.
Henry H. Ritter came to Indiana in 1853. He lived with his uncle Henryand Aunt "Polly" Ritter at their Mount Zion farm until 1863 when hemarried Mary Elizabeth Tubbs. They purchased a 40 acre farm in SalemTownship where she cut the first tree to be cut on this farm, a giantwhite wood. He cleared a spot, had lumber sawed at a mill and built atwo-story frame house. A carpenter by trade, he worked away from homeall week. He also kept clearing of land and farming it. In 1865-66 hebuilt the Mount Zion Church. In later years he bought 10 acres of theJohnson farm adjoining on the south of the original 40 acres. The barnand other buildings were built from timber and the farm sawed at DeckmanSawmill about one mile north of the farm. In about 1894 she built a new10 room house just south of the original house and here they lived untilabout 1911 when they sold the farm and moved to Hudson, Indiana where hedied in 1913. He always enjoyed telling stories of hunting deer andwild turkey and fishing with the early pioneers. He also told how theyforded Pigeon Creek between Golden and Bower lakes."
